Last night my blog post on Facebook Data Center, 1.15 PUE was #11 on google search for “facebook data center.” This morning #7.
And now #1. Wow. I’ll see how long my position lasts. But, pretty cool.
I just installed ClustrMaps to visualize my traffic worldwide. Here is what I have so far after a week’s worth of data.
Part of what drives me to blog daily is knowing that what I write gets high google search results. It would be hard to explain how my blog achieves this, but all you readers are a big part of it as I get traffic that Google sees what I write as relevant. Thanks!

Curious on how google.cn (google’s china version of search) works vs. google.com I tried “green data center”
On Google.com GreenM3 is #1. On Google.cn GreenM3 is #6, but I still snuck in a #1 spot as the #1 entry is my old TechNet article on Green Datacenters.
Actually, now that I look at the Google.com results, I have spot #1 and #2. Pretty cool.

November is my 2 year anniversary running www.greenm3.com on the Green Data Center topic. I started out the site with the encouragement of an old friend Bob Visse who Google searched “green data center” and told me it is an ideal area to start a blog on. After 2 years, the site has 950+ RSS Readers, and numerous top 10 Google search results.
The growth of the readership is amazingly linear.
There is a lot of I’ve learned over the past 2 years, and this blog is part of my system to document what is going in the industry. It is now so ingrained in how I work that blogging is a natural part of the day, and explains why I am now up to this being my 988 post on the blog. Hitting 1,000 posts by Nov 26, 2009 my exact 2 year anniversary is not going to be a problem.
And, the international reach is beyond my expectations. Below is the top 100 countries, rated in order of traffic hits to the blog over the last month.

I use typepad for my blog, and go through the site statistics to see what people are reading checking out what google search words they use to find my entries. This gives me an idea of what people are searching for and who my readers are. The following I am pretty sure is a Gartner employee.
This morning at 9:30p PST I wrote a blog post on Gartner’s recommendation for Pattern-based strategy. At 2:45 and 2:48 pm I got the following hits.
The first was google search for “gartner advanced analytics.” My one entry 5 hours earlier is result #6, beating out NetworkWorld.
The 2nd one is a google search for “reshaping the data center gartner”. I have the #1 search result, behind google news, but beating gartner’s blog, CIO.com, and news.cnet.com.
I was visiting a friend who works at Google yesterday and we chatted briefly how well my blog works with Google search, but I swear I have no insider information.
All I know is keep on writing, and keep on looking at my results.

Data Center “X” just announced a 2 MegaWatt expansion to their facility in Northern California. A major increase in data center capacity, and a source of great joy for the company. And the source of potentially 714 additional tons of carbon introduced each month into the environment.
Many groups and organizations are gathering to address the need to bring our data centers under control. Some are focused on providing marketing value for their members, most others appear genuinely concerned with the amount of power being consumed within data centers, the amount of carbon being produced by data centers, and the potential for using alternative or clean energy initiatives within data centers. There are stories around which claim the data center industry is actually using up to 5% of power consumed within the United States, which if true, makes this a really important discussion.
What I found entertaining was the author’s use of search results to imply the importance of the topic
If you do a “Bing” search won the topic of “green data center,” you will find around 144 million results. Three times as many as a “paris hilton” search. That makes it a fairly saturated topic, indicating a heck of a lot of interest. The first page of the Bing search gives you a mixture of commercial companies, blogs, and “ezines” covering the topic – as well as an organization or two. Some highlights include:
I show up # 2 in bing.com search results vs. #1 in google.com “green data center” search results. It turns out I get 16X more total traffic (not just “green data center”) through google search than bing search. Search is relevant as I get 63% of my web site traffic through search. In fact, I get more traffic through images.google.com search than bing.com search.
