Fluke Roadshow May 2017 - Mobile, Wireless, & Cloud applied to Facility Instrumentation

A couple of years I stopped by the Fluke Booth at a trade show in Charlotte, NC. Talking to one of the booth staff I asked him where he was from. He said he worked in HQ in Everett. Great I live in Redmond we can continue discussions in WA State. The other surprise is Fluke has not targeted data center market as a vertical and he was heading up the efforts.

May 2017 Fluke has a roadshow where Fluke will present solutions for users who are interested in using Mobile, Cloud, and Wireless to make their tasks faster and easier.

I'll be at the Seattle Event on May 2 and Austin Event on May 11.

eBay and Paypal split, what happens to the "conscious uncoupling" of the data center?

eBay and Paypal are becoming two independent companies.  They have CEOs identified.  Figuring out how the stock will be split.  Teams are separate so not an issue except for a few groups.  Finance and HR issues not a big problem.  uh.  What about the data centers?  Will eBay run the data centers and Paypal be a tenant?  Or should it be the the around?

eBay Inc.  today said its Board of Directors, following a strategic review of the company’s growth strategies and structure, has approved a plan to separate the company’s eBay and PayPal businesses into independent publicly traded companies in 2015, subject to customary conditions. Creating two standalone businesses best positions eBay and PayPal to capitalize on their respective growth opportunities in the rapidly changing global commerce and payments landscape, and is the best path for creating sustainable shareholder value, the company said.

“eBay and PayPal are two great businesses with leading global positions in commerce and payments,” said eBay Inc. President and CEO John Donahoe. “For more than a decade eBay and PayPal have mutually benefited from being part of one company, creating substantial shareholder value. However, a thorough strategic review with our board shows that keeping eBay and PayPal together beyond 2015 clearly becomes less advantageous to each business strategically and competitively. The industry landscape is changing, and each business faces different competitive opportunities and challenges.

Or is it like Gwyneth Paltrrow’s infamous not naming a divorce, a conscious uncoupling?  Each of the companies own their own servers, storage, network.  OK.  But what about shared stuff.  Building, power and mechanical infrastructure, network gear to carriers?  Some of that other stuff is like the kids that Gwenyth has to handle in uncoupling.

Who is bigger eBay or Paypal?  Not in terms of revenue, but in terms of data center utilization?   Paypal or eBay?  I think PayPal and some of the friends do.  So do you split the infrastructure and teams based on the % of servers you have in the data center?  No, because some of you may have beefier servers than others.  You could split it based on the power used.

There are three data center sites?  And given availability it would seem both would like to leave things alone and not mess with then infrastructure.  So who moves out?  Or is it shared custody.

This would be an entertaining presentation at a data center conference.

Time can support credibility, Google vs. Microsoft outage reports

One of my friends has made the switch from Google to Microsoft.  Well actually I have many friends who have made the switch.  There are also many who have Google to go to Microsoft.  One friend who made who knows how Microsoft works and Google made the point on how the outage reporting posts from the companies differ.

Microsoft had an Outlook outage with this post on the event.

On Monday and Tuesday of this week, some of our Office 365 customers hosted in our North America datacenters experienced unrelated service issues with our Lync Online and Exchange Online services. First, I want to apologize on behalf of the Office 365 team for the impact and inconvenience this has caused. Email and real-time communications are critical to your business, and my team and I fully recognize our accountability and responsibility as your partner and service provider.

Google reported on one of its outages with this.

Earlier today, most Google users who use logged-in services like Gmail, Google+, Calendar and Documents found they were unable to access those services for approximately 25 minutes. For about 10 percent of users, the problem persisted for as much as 30 minutes longer. Whether the effect was brief or lasted the better part of an hour, please accept our apologies—we strive to make all of Google’s services available and fast for you, all the time, and we missed the mark today.

One way to look at the contrast is Google is specific with the time of 25 minutes, 30 minutes longer.

Microsoft says they have full understanding of the issues, but doesn’t provide the specifics on time.

We have a full understanding of the issues, and the root causes of both the Exchange Online and Lync Online services have already been fixed.

Google had another outage where specifics are reported down to the minute.

Issue Summary

From 6:26 PM to 7:58 PM PT, requests to most Google APIs resulted in 500 error response messages. Google applications that rely on these APIs also returned errors or had reduced functionality. At its peak, the issue affected 100% of traffic to this API infrastructure. Users could continue to access certain APIs that run on separate infrastructures. The root cause of this outage was an invalid configuration change that exposed a bug in a widely used internal library.

Timeline (all times Pacific Time)

  • 6:19 PM: Configuration push begins
  • 6:26 PM: Outage begins
  • 6:26 PM: Pagers alerted teams
  • 6:54 PM: Failed configuration change rollback
  • 7:15 PM: Successful configuration change rollback
  • 7:19 PM: Server restarts begin
  • 7:58 PM: 100% of traffic back online

Outages are painful for all companies.

Suggestion for when you report your own outage if you include the time of events, then your communication can be viewed as more credible.  Using terms like “some” or “brief” doesn’t work when you are the one who is affected by the outage and brief would mean a minute of outage.

Human Perception behind Joyent and Adobe's outage, Typing is Not A Cause

Joyent and Adobe have the outages for the month of May.

Joyent post their post-mortem.

Adobe posts an apology.

Both of these outages occurred during maintenance where someone type a command that did what it was supposed to do impacting a service.  The human perception problem is the person who typed the command could not see/perceive the system wide impact of their command.

Adobe doesn’t provide any details on what they plan to do.  Joyent does.

We will be taking several steps to prevent this failure mode from happening again, and ensuring that other business disaster scenarios are able to recover more quickly.

First, we will be dramatically improving the tooling that humans (and systems) interact with such that input validation is much more strict and will not allow for all servers, and control plane servers to be rebooted simultaneously. We have already begun putting in place a number of immediate fixes to tools that operators use to mitigate this, and we will be rethinking what tools are necessary over the coming days and weeks so that "full power" tools are not the only means by which to accomplish routine tasks.

You can imagine the efforts people will go through to create safeguards to eliminate the possibility of this type of outage.  Unfortunately, this will also most likely put a burden on day to day operations.

Another way to solve the problem is to give people the ability to see the impact of their actions.  No one in their right mind would execute a command to reboot all the servers at Joyent.  And no one in their right mind would delete a directory with all user records.

Adobe's Creative Cloud Outage exposes Single Point of Failure for Creative Pros

I have a friend who worked on the Adobe Cloud at the beginning.  He left Adobe 3 years ago so he has nothing to do with the current newsworthy outage.  Although some media outlets found they could not publish the news because Adobe Creative Cloud was down.
