Another Data Center Company targets the GigaOm audience with the Cloud

Part of hanging out with GigaOm is seeing how the rest of the data center industry interacts with their audience.  I've consistently seen Dupont Fabros, Softlayer, and Verizon Terramark sales teams at events, and they are quite happy with the audience they talk to.

What got my attention today is Internap sponsored a post on their webcast on GigaOm.

Roasted Chicken & Roasted Brussel Sprouts

I just got done cooking one of our favorite meals and playing with my new Canon 6D I decided to take some pictures.  One of my ex-Microsoft friends came over for lunch last week and I cooked the same meal for lunch plus roasted carrots.

Here is the Roasted chicken with about 20 minutes left to cook.

I put a bit of BBQ seasoning under the skin and over.  Turn the chicken about every 6 minutes and rotate the ends to evenly cook the chicken.  This is when it is convenient to have the open oven in the main corner of the kitchen.  Opening and closing a traditional oven or running to the outdoor grill would not be fun.  When i roast the carrots I throw them in the same cast iron skillet and the carrots roast for 1 hr 15 minutes with the chicken juices and fat.

I've cooked two chickens at the same time and it really isn't that much harder as there is plenty room in the oven and I am repeating the same tasks.

Here is the chicken done and ready to rest.  Yes, the skin is crispy and tasty.

I rotate the chicken more often because it is fun to play with my food.  I wonder if the food tastes better the more I have fun playing. :-)

In the skillet I cooked the chicken I put halved and trimmed brussel sprouts, some salt and pepper, no oil as I just cook the chicken in the olive oil and chicken juices.

12 minutes later Brussel Sprouts are done ( I usually rotate the Brussels sprouts one or two times) and chicken is done resting and ready to cut up.

While I cook my son watches Netflix and waits for his roasted chicken leg.  His sister is off at soccer practice.

I must admit with my new Canon 6D pictures are pretty good.  Now I can send this blog post to my friend who was using his iPhone to show the meal we ate.

I skipped AFCOM Data Center World and Uptime Symposium? Why?  Main reason is more of my data center friends are going to 7x24 Exchange than the other conferences.  Who?  Well its not appropriate to discuss those who don't publicly announce they are going.  If you are a speaker you do announce you are going.  From the speaker list I am psyched to see

New Camera - Canon 6D - full sensor, higher noise free ISO, GPS, and wifi

Besides smartphone cameras I have a Canon SD100 w GPS and Canon 7D, but after my Canon SD100 had a warranty covered failure losing a GPS tagging camera made me think about the Canon 6D which I decided to go ahead and get.  The main reasons I wanted it were the full sensor vs. an APS-C, higher noise free ISO settings (there is not a built in flash in a 6D), GPS built in, and wifi.

One of the things a full sensor makes it easier to do is blur the background to focus on a subject which the flowers in the center pop.

Higher ISO let's me crank things up. I shot this at ISO 1600, 80mm, f/7.1, 1/250.  Focus isn't quite there as this was only the 2nd day with the camera. :-)

The high ISO also means the video in low light works really well.  Here is a screen scrape from a video.

GPS tagging is really handy and I believed in the feature 13 years ago when we tried to tell people at Microsoft that GPS tagging of images would be big.  Huhh??? was most the reaction back then.

What's the wifi good for?  Wireless remote control of the camera from an iPhone or Android phone.

This is when I am so glad I am able to use MarsEdit.  Writing this blog post would be totally painful in a browser app.

Not at Uptime Symposium again

Last year I skipped Uptime Symposium given I didn't qualify for a media pass.  So, I went to the hotel bar and met 99% of the people I would want to meet and was there for 12 hours straight.  This year I am in the bay area during uptime, but didn't have the time I had last year.

Uptime just announced there are free exhibit passes, so I thought I could see if there was anything interesting.

But, I looked at the times when the expo was open, and I am busy during all those times.

Exposition Hall will be available to you during these hours:

• Mon 5-7pm
• Tues 12-2:30pm, 5:30-7:30pm
• Wed 12:30-3pm

So, I'll be passing on Uptime's free offer for the exposition.  The good thing is I'll be able to talk to some friends who are at the show and hear if they found anything interesting.

One guy I recently met is presenting and he is a newbie to Uptime, I'll be curious what he has to say about the conference and his observations.  Sometimes it is good to get a new set of eyes to look at what is going on.
