XS23 II, Dell’s Opposite of XS11-VX8

I missed the post on XS23 II, the Intel Nehalem based server, the opposite end of the spectrum, a XS11-VX8 VIA based server.

Early last year, we developed a revolutionary design for the folks building hyper-scaled-out platforms. We’ve evolved that design and recently began shipping a new iteration of this system – the XS-23 II.   One of the first customers to receive this new system is Lawrence Livermore National Labs who is utilizing XS-23 II for their Hyperion project.  Ashlee Vance of the New York Times got one of the first glimpses of the system during a visit this week.

Back to the XS-23 II, this system will support Intel’s Nehalem family of processors and we’ll also continue to offer other flavors (San Clemente, Seaburg) for specific applications. One of the other interesting things we’ve done recently in the XS-series was a two-server design where we replace two of the four system boards in the chassis with two monster graphics cards which are employed as co-processors. More on that later.

and here is the NY Times post.

Hardware peepers – my term for the iron-obsessed, geeky version of bird watchers – may take note of some of the new Dell systems used to build the machine. The computers code-named Xanadu II are the first servers Dell has shipped to a customer with Intel’s soon-to-be-released Nehalem chip.

And I’m pretty sure this marks the first sighting of a Nehalem-based server in the wild.

Nehalem, which is the code name for the chip design, is a big deal in the semiconductor world because it makes Intel even stronger against Advanced Micro Devices. The Nehalem chips bring a number of features that get Intel caught up with A.M.D. and contemporary chip designs in general.

Intel is expected to officially announce a fleet of Nehalem server chips any day now, but it looks like Dell has been moving early with the product.

XS11-VX8 Google Search, greenm3 back to #2

I’ve written 3 blog entries on the XS11-VX8.

/2009/05/xs11-vx8-dells-via-nano-server-anti-vmware-and-intel.html

/2009/05/dells-xs11-vx8-shows-momentum-for-little-green-server.html

/2009/05/dell-xs11-vx8-video-blog.html

I was disappointed when at first I went from #2 to #40, but figured oh well, the rest of the news/blogger community started putting “xs11-vx8” in their titles, so they got the traffic.

But, a few days later I am back to #2 right behind the Dell Blog.  I couldn’t exactly say why Google Search likes me, but it is pretty cool to be #2 out 11,000 search results.

clip_image002

There are now 11,000 results for a search on “xs11-vx8” in less than a week, and buzz that rivals Intel Xeon servers.

Dell and Via have got to be jumping for joy, slapping high five.

"A one-size fits all approach simply does not work for hyper-scale computing customers. The unique architecture of environments like Web hosting render unnecessary many of the system features required by mainstream IT.  By working with VIA to design a high density, lower power system, Dell is designing for these customer's specific needs, driving down costs and improving efficiency." -Forrest Norrod, vice president and general manager of Dell's Data Center Solutions division.

The XS11-VX8 server addresses the need in hyperscale environments like Web hosting, Web farms and light load infrastructures for a high density, low power and 'Ultra-Light' server product. In these applications general-purpose servers are under-utilized and inefficient, requiring expensive cooling infrastructures and using more energy than the applications require.

The VIA Nano-powered XS11-VX8 is the densest server on the market with 12 systems housed in a 2U chassis. Promising up to 34% lower TCO compared to the use of white box client systems, the XS11-VX8 is designed for single server workloads where overall power consumption needs to be less than 30 watts per system.

When Personalities Collide, Obstacles for a Green Data Center

I’ve been thinking about Mike Manos’s post on When Worlds Collide.

Chiller-Side Chats: When Worlds Collide

May 14, 2009 by mmanos

To most outsiders the datacenter industry may seem to be quite parochial.   A niche blend at the intersection of building and IT technologies.   Even to many senior business managers both of these areas in and of themselves are not necessarily considered business critical. As such, little if any time is spent concentrating on the issues this space.  That is of course until it becomes business critical.  At that time many business managers struggle to navigate this complex world.  That complexity can drive frustration, confusion, and is prone to misinformation ultimately leading to bad business decisions.  In many cases it might even be the first time they speak to those in the organization responsible for these assets.

What  seems like a difficulty is the fact that the different parties have distinctly different personalities.  But, even deeper is these groups communicate in different ways.  So, if you don’t have common ways to communicate how can you work together?

Here are some character archetypes to think about

The Architect.

THE ARCHITECT is reserved, creative, intellectual, and adaptable. They are also considered to be the most logical of the character types. They are particularly well suited to occupations such as mediators, musicians and strategic planners.

THE ARCHITECT’s strongest personality indicators are in introversion, intuition, thinking and perception. Some areas may be more pronounced than others. The following information contains a broad description of the character's individual personality components.

The Engineer.

THE WIZARD is autonomous, imaginative, logical and organized. They are also considered the most independent of the character types. They are particularly well suited to occupations such as engineers, planners and publishers.

THE WIZARD is a magical concoction of introversion, intuition, thinking and judgment. Some areas may be more pronounced than others. The following information contains a broad description of THE WIZARD'S individual personality ingredients.

The Manager/Executive.

THE OVERSEER is friendly, realistic, analytical and organized. They are the most driven and enthusiastic of the character types. They are particularly well suited to occupations such as executives, analysts and managers.

THE OVERSEER’S strongest personality indicators are in extroversion, sensing, thinking and judgment. Some areas may be more pronounced than others. The following information contains a broad description of their individual character ingredients.

The Real Estate and Facilities.

THE LOYALIST is talkative, practical, empathetic and decisive. They are also the most harmonious of character types. They are particularly well suited to occupations such as counselors, coaches and nurses.

THE LOYALIST 'S strongest personality indicators are in extroversion, sensing, feeling and judgment. Some areas may be more pronounced than others. The following information contains a broad description of the individual characteristics.

The Accountant.

THE DEFENDER is cautious, hard working, thoughtful and careful. Of the character types, they are the most dedicated to their causes and relationships. They are particularly well suited as health care technicians, accountants and customer service representatives.

THE DEFENDER'S strongest personality indicators are in introversion, sensing, feeling and judgment. Some areas may be more pronounced than others. The following information contains a broad description of their character components.

What is missing is the character “the Modeler”  a person who is abstracting and characterizing these  different groups to create a common language.

I’ll write more on this, and this is just a starting point.

Why Green Movement has Momentum, The Climate-Industrial Complex

The Green Movement is getting so much momentum it is being targeted in a animated series to poke fun at an environmentally sensitive family.

Making a Mockery of Being Green

The creator of ‘Beavis and Butt-Head’ and ‘King of the Hill’ has a new target: environmentalists

By JAMIN BROPHY-WARREN

Director Mike Judge’s new animated television series “The Goode Family” is a send-up of a clan of environmentalists who live by the words “What would Al Gore do?” Gerald and Helen Goode want nothing more than to minimize their carbon footprint. They feed their dog, Che, only veggies (much to the pet’s dismay) and Mr. Goode dutifully separates sheets of toilet paper when his wife accidentally buys two-ply. And, of course, the family drives a hybrid.

ABC

Community activist Helen Goode (the voice of Nancy Carell) chats with a neighbor in the coming ABC animated series ‘The Goode Family,’ which pokes fun at a household of environmentalists living in the Midwest.

On Wednesday at 9 p.m., “The Goode Family” will have its premiere on ABC and become the first animated series on the network’s prime-time lineup since 1995 when “The Critic” starring Jon Lovitz ended its second season.

In an opinion article in WSJ.com though, a point is made just like there was a tight relationship between the defense industry and the US military, the new movement is the “climate-industrial complex.”

The Climate-Industrial Complex

Some businesses see nothing but profits in the green movement.

By BJORN LOMBORG

Some business leaders are cozying up with politicians and scientists to demand swift, drastic action on global warming. This is a new twist on a very old practice: companies using public policy to line their own pockets.

The tight relationship between the groups echoes the relationship among weapons makers, researchers and the U.S. military during the Cold War. President Dwight Eisenhower famously warned about the might of the "military-industrial complex," cautioning that "the potential for the disastrous rise of misplaced power exists and will persist." He worried that "there is a recurring temptation to feel that some spectacular and costly action could become the miraculous solution to all current difficulties."

This is certainly true of climate change. We are told that very expensive carbon regulations are the only way to respond to global warming, despite ample evidence that this approach does not pass a basic cost-benefit test. We must ask whether a "climate-industrial complex" is emerging, pressing taxpayers to fork over money to please those who stand to gain.

I was talking to a friend who makes numerous presentations on energy efficiency, and he is amazed at how many in the audience are “suits” – the attorneys and marketing staff learning how to take advantage of the coming changes.

So, don’t think that the green movement is being powered by just the characters in the “goode family”, there is a how industry business behind this as well.

The partnership among self-interested businesses, grandstanding politicians and alarmist campaigners truly is an unholy alliance. The climate-industrial complex does not promote discussion on how to overcome this challenge in a way that will be best for everybody. We should not be surprised or impressed that those who stand to make a profit are among the loudest calling for politicians to act. Spending a fortune on global carbon regulations will benefit a few, but dearly cost everybody else.

Dell’s XS11-VX8, Shows Momentum for Little Green Server

I was all excited I was #2 for Google search “xs11-vx8”, but that was 2 days ago.

My blog works well for google search on “XS11-VX8”.  Giving me #2 in search results, and I only posted my blog entry yesterday even though news has been going on for the past 3 days

But, 2 days later, I am down to position #40 as more people have put XS11-VX8 is their content.

There are 174 news entries showing up in news.google.com including Chinese and Japanese trade rags, and many other foreign languages.

I know people laughed when I discuss the idea of Little Green Servers, but i am laughing now.  And, reminded me of my Small is Beautiful post
